The Clinical Section of the Public Health Laboratory provides testing in areas of virology, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, and mycobacteriology. The laboratory offers sophisticated, state-of-the-art technology, such as, capillary blood lead testing in children by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry, rapid identification of gonorrhea and chlamydia using a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) and molecular methods for the detection of influenza and norovirus. It should also be noted that the Public Health Laboratory is the only laboratory that provides testing for rabies. The Public Health Laboratory serves as a reference laboratory and offers expert advice regarding the identification of agents of infectious diseases to local physicians, local laboratories and other health care professionals.
