Fresno County Department of Social Services warns of text messaging scam
FRESNO, CA – The Fresno County Department of Social Services (DSS) is warning people about a text message scam targeting DSS clients.
While there have not been any cases reported in Fresno County at this time, clients and other individuals in neighboring areas have reported receiving text messages prompting them to call regarding CalWORKs, a public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child(ren) in the home.
Upon calling the number, an automated system prompts them to enter personal information such as EBT card number, PIN, date of birth, and/or Social Security Number. In some cases, calls may be answered by a live person who may also be fraudulently representing themselves as social services staff.
Please be aware that these text messages are NOT originating from the Fresno County DSS. Should you receive a suspicious text message or phone call, do NOT give out your personal information including your EBT PIN. Fresno County DSS would never ask for your EBT PIN.
To report issues, cancel your cards, or change your PIN, clients may call the EBT Customer Service Line, toll free at 1-877-328-9677. Clients may also contact Fresno County DSS directly, toll free at 1-855-832-8082 to report any issues.
If you have received one of these messages and provided personal information, it is recommended that you file a report with your local police department in addition to contacting DSS.
