– Officials are providing guidance to Fresno County island and unincorporated area property owners in support of ongoing efforts to clean up homeless encampments, which pose health and safety risks to communities.

The County’s Working Group to Address Homeless Encampments compiled a checklist for owners to help clean up unsafe conditions and secure their property. This information, with contact numbers, is available here on the Fresno County website. The checklist includes items such as ensuring overgrown trees and brush, which provide cover for camping and illegal activity, are trimmed and property is maintained.

Fresno County issued a reminder that it is the owner’s responsibility to take reasonable steps to maintain their property against code violations and nuisances.

Owners are encouraged to remain vigilant and monitor their property regularly for accumulating trash, junk, debris, and conditions that constitute health and safety hazards.

Speaking during the Board of Supervisors meeting this morning, officials from the Working Group to Address Homeless Encampments reported that County efforts have resulted in the successful cleanup of nine large encampments since November of 2015. In FY 2016-17 the cleanup costs totaled approximately $140,000.
