The New Americans Services Section of Department of Social Services (DSS) focuses on providing culturally sensitive employment and temporary assistance services to the New Americans of Fresno County. This specialized section consists of two divisions: the Employment Services Section and the Temporary Assistance Section.
Employment services are provided to new Americans and former refugees in receipt of CalWORKs, and/or Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA). These services are designed to assist participants in achieving or sustaining financial self-reliance, and to address multiple employment barriers when needed. Services offered include employment appraisals, intensive case management and specialized employment strategies to meet the unique needs of this population.
The Temporary Assistance Section processes requests for benefits such as Cash aid, Food Stamps and Medi-Cal, and provides referrals to community agencies for additional assistance. Applications are also taken for the RCA program for refugees without children who may qualify for financial assistance, Food Stamps and Medi-Cal for up to eight months. Following this eight month period, eligibility is explored for General Relief, Food Stamps and the Medical Services Program.
Language services are available to limited or non-English speaking applicants/clients at no charge.
