Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP)
Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) is responsible for developing response plans to be used in the event of a large scale threat to the health of the residents of Fresno County. Through planning, exercises, community education, and training, PHEP ensures that the county’s first responders and health care system prepare, respond and recover from public health emergencies in an effective manner. To do this, PHEP coordinates with agencies such as local hospitals, clinics, the Office of Emergency Services (OES), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), as well as other county agencies and organizations.
Some examples of public health emergencies are:
Disease outbreaks, such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome); biological terrorist attacks such as an anthrax release; pandemic flu; chemical spills such as chlorine gas; severe weather such as extreme heat; and natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or wildfires
